О первом неповиновении
И дерева запретного плоде,
Чей бренный вкус принёс в мир смерть и горе
С потерей Рая до поры, пока
Великий человек вернул нам милость, [ 5 ]
Пой, Муза неба, вдохновлявшая
С Хорива иль Синая пастуха,
Учившего всё избранное племя:
В начале были небо и земля
Из Хаоса; а если холм Сиона [ 10 ]
Тебе милей и Силоамский ключ
У божьего оракула, приму
Твою подмогу для геройской песни,
Что мощным звуком хочеть улететь
Превыше Аонийских гор в погоне [ 15 ]
За небывалым в прозе и стихе.
А главное, о Дух, что храмам всем
Предпочитаешь искреннее сердце,
Наставь меня, ведь ты всё знаешь: ты
С начала был, и с мощными крылами, [ 20 ]
Как голубь, нависал над самой бездной,
Даря ей жизнь: всё тёмное во мне
Ты освети, и подними, что низко;
Чтоб, поравнявшись с высшим рассужденьем,
Я смог бы утвердиться в Провиденье [ 25 ]
И оправдать пути Господни людям.

And chiefly Thou O Spirit, that dost prefer
Before all Temples th' upright heart and pure,
Instruct me, for Thou know'st; Thou from the first
Wast present, and with mighty wings outspread [ 20 ]
Dove-like satst brooding on the vast Abyss
And mad'st it pregnant: What in me is dark
Illumin, what is low raise and support;
That to the highth of this great Argument
I may assert Eternal Providence, [ 25 ]
And justifie the wayes of God to men.
