Покаяться в грехе, что совершил я
И породил - а может, ликовать, [475]
Что столько из него добра возникло:
И в славе Бог, и к людям Бог добрее,
И Божья милость одолеет гнев.
Но если наш Спаситель в небеса
Вернуться должен, что же станет с горсткой [480]
Тех верных, что живут среди неверных,
Враждебных правде? Кто их поведёт
И защитит? Не будет ли их участь
Страшнее, чем его была когда-то?"
"Конечно, будет, - молвил ангел. - Но [485]
Своим Бог утешителя пошлёт,
Обет Отца, и Дух пребудет с ними,
И в их сердца вселит законы веры,
Что действуют лишь с помощью любви,
Чтоб к истине вели, вооружали [490]
Оружием духовным, стойким против
Наскоков Сатаны и злобных стрел -
Научит человека не бояться
До самой смерти; от подобных зверств
Он утешеньем внутренним укроет [495]
И укрепит их так, что изумится
Гонитель гордый: Дух, сперва излившись
На головы апостолов, пошлёт их
Крестить народы, а затем прольётся
На всех крещёных, дав им чудный дар [500]
Вещать на всех наречьях и творить
Все чудеса, как Бог. Они найдут
Повсюду многих, кто с восторгом примет
Благие вести с неба; наконец,
Исполнив долг, оставив род в порядке, [505]
Историю с доктриной записав,
Они умрут; и тут - предупреждаю! -
Учителям придут на смену волки:
Священные мистерии небес
Они служить заставят личным целям, [510]
Амбициям и алчности, и правду
С традицией смешают, с предрассудком,
Оставив только в записях, которых
Никто не разберёт, лишь Дух один.
Затем они за имена возьмутся, [515]
За титулы и земли, чтоб примкнуть
И к власти светской, хоть и притворяясь
Духовной; и присвоят Божий дух
Себе одним, хоть он свободно дан

Мирскою силой свой закон духовный
Навяжут всем - закон, что никого
Не защитит, закон, который Дух
Не пишет в сердце. Что же, им придётся
Дух милости прогнуть, связать любовь, [525]
С ним слитную? придётся им разрушить
Живые храмы, поднятые верой -
Их верой, не чужой? Кто на земле
Непогрешим пред совестью и верой?
Но многие решат лишь делать вид: [530]
Когда начнут преследовать всех тех,
Кто чистым сердцем молится и Духу,
И Истине, другие - большинство -
Религиозны будут лишь по форме
И ритуалам; Истина сбежит [535]
Под градом стрел, и трудно будет встретить
Труды той веры; станет мир таким -
Для верных трудным, для дурных хорошим,
Под весом своим стонущим, пока
День не придёт, неся дыханье добрым [540]
И мщенье злым, когда вернётся тот,
Кто был тебе обещан в помощь, семя
Жены - сперва предсказанный неясно,
Но вот он, твой Спаситель и Владыка;
Из райских облаков в отцовской славе [545]

Powrd first on his Apostles, whom he sends
To evangelize the Nations, then on all

As did thir Lord before them. Thus they win
Great numbers of each Nation to receave
With joy the tidings brought from Heav'n: at length
Thir Ministry perform'd, and race well run, [ 505 ]
Thir doctrine and thir story written left,
They die; but in thir room, as they forewarne,
Wolves shall succeed for teachers, grievous Wolves,
Who all the sacred mysteries of Heav'n
To thir own vile advantages shall turne [ 510 ]
Of lucre and ambition, and the truth
With superstitions and traditions taint,
Left onely in those written Records pure,
Though not but by the Spirit understood.
Then shall they seek to avail themselves of names, [ 515 ]
Places and titles, and with these to joine
Secular power, though feigning still to act
By spiritual, to themselves appropriating
The Spirit of God, promisd alike and giv'n
To all Beleevers; and from that pretense, [ 520 ]
Spiritual Lawes by carnal power shall force
On every conscience; Laws which none shall finde
Left them inrould, or what the Spirit within
Shall on the heart engrave. What will they then
But force the Spirit of Grace it self, and binde [ 525 ]
His consort Libertie; what, but unbuild
His living Temples, built by Faith to stand,
Thir own Faith not anothers: for on Earth
Who against Faith and Conscience can be heard
Infallible? yet many will presume: [ 530 ]
Whence heavie persecution shall arise
On all who in the worship persevere
Of Spirit and Truth; the rest, farr greater part,
Well deem in outward Rites and specious formes
Religion satisfi'd; Truth shall retire [ 535 ]
Bestuck with slandrous darts, and works of Faith
Rarely be found: so shall the World goe on,
To good malignant, to bad men benigne,
Under her own waight groaning till the day

And vengeance to the wicked, at return

New Heav'ns, new Earth, Ages of endless date
