Как Рафаил-архангел на примере
Предостерёг Адама от измены
Рассказом о падении из Рая
Изменников - чтоб это не случилось
С Адамом или всем его потомством: [ 45 ]
Им запретили дерева касаться,
И это их единственный запрет,
Легчайший там, где столь обширен выбор
Всех прочих вкусов, чтобы утолить
Их аппетит. Они с супругой Евой [ 50 ]
Внимали, и наполнились восторгом
И мыслями глубокими, услышав
Столь дивные рассказы - не могли
Они представить ненависть в Раю,
Войну так близко к Божьему престолу [ 55 ]
С таким смятением; но зло вернулось
И хлынуло потоком на виновных
В его истоках, и его не спутать
С благословением. Адам отверг
Сомненья в сердце; и спешил, безгрешен, [ 60 ]
Узнать всё, что могло его касаться -
Как этот мир божественных небес
С загадочной землёй возник впервые;
Когда он создан, из чего, зачем;
Что было до него в саду Эдема [ 65 ]
Или вокруг; мы, жажду утолив,
Взгляд всё равно с источника не сводим,
Чей мерный шёпот струй вновь будит жажду.

With such confusion: but the evil soon
Driv'n back redounded as a flood on those
From whom it sprung, impossible to mix
With Blessedness. Whence Adam soon repeal'd
The doubts that in his heart arose: and now [ 60 ]
Led on, yet sinless, with desire to know
What neerer might concern him, how this World
Of Heav'n and Earth conspicious first began,
When, and whereof created, for what cause,
What within Eden or without was done [ 65 ]
Before his memorie, as one whose drouth
Yet scarce allay'd still eyes the current streame,
Whose liquid murmur heard new thirst excites,
Proceeded thus to ask his Heav'nly Guest.
