Тем временем о мерзком и жестоком
Деянье Сатаны в земном раю,
Где он склонил вкусить запретный плод
Сначала Еву, а потом та - мужа,
В Раю узнали: что избегнет взгляда [ 5 ]
Всевидящего Бога, что обманет
Всеведущее сердце? кто, столь мудр
И справедлив, позволил Сатане
Испытывать ум Человека - мощный
И вольный обнаружить и отвергнуть [ 10 ]
Искус врага, рядящегося другом?
Ведь знали же, и надо было помнить
Запрет Небес - не пробовать плода,
Хоть искушают; а запрет нарушив,
Накликали себе и наказанье, [ 15 ]
И все грехи, достойные паденья.
Из Сада в Рай поспешно поднялись
Все ангелы-хранители - печально
И молча, зная участь Человека
И удивляясь, как тайком проник [ 20 ]
Хитрющий Враг. Когда плохие вести
С Земли достигли Рая, огорчив
Всех слышавших, печаль не обошла
Жильцов небес, но с жалостью смешалась,
Божественную благость не нарушив. [ 25 ]
Бесплотный люд к прибывшим поспешил
Во множестве, стремясь узнать, что там
Случилось. Те скорее прямо к трону,
Чтоб доложить, мол, не смыкали глаз,
Следили, как могли - и получили [ 30 ]
Прощение; Всевышний наш Отец
Из облака секретного на небе
Громоподобным голосом изрёк:

"О, ангелы, о, силы, что вернулись,
Заданье провалив! не беспокойтесь, [ 35 ]
Все эти треволненья на земле
Предотвратить никак вы не могли:
Так предсказали мы, когда бежал
Через залив из Ада Искуситель.
Я вам тогда сказал: он преуспеет [ 40 ]
В коварстве; совратится человек,
На лесть он клюнет и поверит лжи
Про своего Творца; я не давал
Указа, чтоб падение свершилось,
Не задевал ни краешка его [ 45 ]
Свободной воли - на весах он сам
Склонился влево. Но он пал, и что
Нам остаётся: смертный приговор
За преступленье объявить ему,
Хоть он его считает пустословьем, [ 50 ]
Раз сразу не исполнен, скажем, громом,
Как он боялся; но поймёт он вскоре:
Отсрочка - не прощенье. Справедливость
Излишня, раз глумятся над подарком.
Кого же я послал судить? тебя, [ 55 ]
Мой полномочный Сын, тебя поставил
Судьёй над Раем, над Землёй, над Адом.
Легко заметить: посылал я сразу
И справедливость, и прощенье, дав
Заступника и друга людям (ты ведь - [ 60 ]
Их искупитель вольный), чтоб судил
Паденье человека человек".

Так говорил Отец, сияя славой
С правой руки, где Сын его сверкал
Безоблачной божественностью; ярко [ 65 ]
Отцовское сиянье отражая,
Он мягко и божественно ответил.

"Отец мой Вечный, всё, как ты решишь,
Исполню я на Небе и Земле,
Чтобы твоё благоволенье было [ 70 ]
В сыне возлюбленном. Иду на землю
Преступников судить, но знаешь, как бы
Я ни судил, всё худшее на мне
Должно быть, как пора придёт, ведь я
Тебе так обещал; и не жалею, [ 75 ]
Что на себя твою приму я кару,
Но так смешать я должен справедливость
С прощением, чтоб удовлетворить
Их на земле и ублажить тебя.
Ни публики не нужно, ни толпы, [ 80 ]
Когда в суде лишь те, кого мы судим,
Те двое; но приговорён-то третий,
Что бегством сам признал свою вину,
А змея обвинять нам вовсе не в чем".

Meanwhile the hainous and despightfull act
Of Satan done in Paradise, and how
Hee in the Serpent, had perverted Eve,
Her Husband shee, to taste the fatall fruit,
Was known in Heav'n; for what can scape the Eye [ 5 ]
Of God All-seeing, or deceave his Heart
Omniscient, who in all things wise and just,
Hinder'd not Satan to attempt the minde
Of Man, with strength entire, and free will arm'd,
Complete to have discover'd and repulst [ 10 ]
Whatever wiles of Foe or seeming Friend.
For still they knew, and ought to have still remember'd
The high Injunction not to taste that Fruit,
Whoever tempted; which they not obeying,
Incurr'd, what could they less, the penaltie, [ 15 ]
And manifold in sin, deserv'd to fall.
Up into Heav'n from Paradise in haste
Th' Angelic Guards ascended, mute and sad
For Man, for of his state by this they knew,
Much wondring how the suttle Fiend had stoln [ 20 ]
Entrance unseen. Soon as th' unwelcome news
From Earth arriv'd at Heaven Gate, displeas'd
All were who heard, dim sadness did not spare
That time Celestial visages, yet mixt
With pitie, violated not thir bliss. [ 25 ]
About the new-arriv'd, in multitudes
Th' ethereal People ran, to hear and know
How all befell: they towards the Throne Supream
Accountable made haste to make appear
With righteous plea, thir utmost vigilance, [ 30 ]
And easily approv'd; when the most High
Eternal Father from his secret Cloud,
Amidst in Thunder utter'd thus his voice.

Assembl'd Angels, and ye Powers return'd
From unsuccessful charge, be not dismaid, [ 35 ]
Nor troubl'd at these tidings from the Earth,
Which your sincerest care could not prevent,
Foretold so lately what would come to pass,
When first this Tempter cross'd the Gulf from Hell.
I told ye then he should prevail and speed [ 40 ]
On his bad Errand, Man should be seduc't
And flatter'd out of all, believing lies
Against his Maker; no Decree of mine
Concurring to necessitate his Fall,
Or touch with lightest moment of impulse [ 45 ]
His free Will, to her own inclining left
In eevn scale. But fall'n he is, and now
What rests but that the mortal Sentence pass
On his transgression Death denounc't that day,
Which he presumes already vain and void, [ 50 ]
Because not yet inflicted, as he fear'd,
By some immediate stroak; but soon shall find
Forbearance no acquittance ere day end.
Justice shall not return as bountie scorn'd.
But whom send I to judge them? whom but thee [ 55 ]
Vicegerent Son, to thee I have transferr'd
All Judgement whether in Heav'n, or Earth, or Hell.
Easie it might be seen that I intend
Mercie collegue with Justice, sending thee
Mans Friend his Mediator, his design'd [ 60 ]
Both Ransom and Redeemer voluntarie,
And destin'd Man himself to judge Man fall'n.

So spake the Father, and unfoulding bright
Toward the right hand his Glorie, on the Son
Blaz'd forth unclouded Deitie; he full [ 65 ]
Resplendent all his Father manifest
Express'd, and thus divinely answer'd milde.

Father Eternal, thine is to decree,
Mine both in Heav'n and Earth to do thy will
Supream, that thou in mee thy Son belov'd [ 70 ]
Mayst ever rest well pleas'd. I go to judge
On Earth these thy transgressors, but thou knowst,
Whoever judg'd, the worst on mee must light,
When time shall be, for so I undertook
Before thee; and not repenting, this obtaine [ 75 ]
Of right, that I may mitigate thir doom
On me deriv'd, yet I shall temper so
Justice with Mercie, as may illustrate most
Them fully satisfied, and thee appease.
Attendance none shall need, nor Train, where none [ 80 ]
Are to behold the Judgement, but the judg'd,
Those two; the third best absent is condemn'd,
Convict by flight, and Rebel to all Law
Conviction to the Serpent none belongs.
