Империю не мог он не увидеть,

До Аль-Мансура царств, до Феса, Суса,

Европу видел, где собрался Рим [405]

Атабалипы, и леса Гайаны -

Столицу Эльдорадо. Но для видов
Важнее Михаил снял плёнку с глаз
Адама, что коварный фрукт взрастил,
Суля всевиденье; промыл зрачки -
Ведь предстояло многое увидеть - [415]
И капнул трижды из колодца жизни.
В ингредиентах было столько силы,
Проникшей к центру мысленного взгляда,
Что, вынужден закрыть глаза, Адам
Осел на землю, впав в какой-то транс; [420]
Но ангел мягко за руку его
Поднял и вновь потребовал вниманья:
"Адам, открой глаза и посмотри,
Как повлияло преступленье на
Потомков, что не трогали запретных [425]
Деревьев, и со Змеем не общались,
И, не грешив, вслед твоему греху
Ужасные деяния творят".

Алтарь посередине возвышался
В траве; там потный и усталый жнец
