Ted Hughes. Examination at the Womb-Door

Who owns those scrawny little feet? Death.
Who owns this bristly scorched-looking face? Death.
Who owns these still-working lungs? Death.
Who owns this utility coat of muscles? Death.
Who owns these unspeakable guts? Death.
Who owns these questionable brains? Death.
All this messy blood? Death.
These minimum-efficiency eyes? Death.
This wicked little tongue? Death.
This occasional wakefulness? Death.

Given, stolen, or held pending trial?
Held.

Who owns the whole rainy, stony earth? Death.
Who owns all of space? Death.

Who is stronger than hope? Death.
Who is stronger than the will? Death.
Stronger than love? Death.
Stronger than life? Death.

But who is stronger than Death?
Me, evidently.

Pass, Crow.

...But before it can get born, it has to go through all manner of adventures, which it goes through and, finally, it gets to the point of being born. Then, just before it can get born, there's an examination.
This is his examination at the womb door - and it's a sort of vocal examination...

...But this world he appears into is a world where everything is happening simultaneously, so the beginning and end are present, and all the episodes of all history are present, as in all the different rooms of a gigantic hotel. ..

WOW - you picked such a hard poet to translate!!

his apparent ease of writing and subtle flickerings of language and arcane rhythm - as well as life, nature and animals, very hard!

congratulations, from what i can tell you have done a fine job of work too!:))

btw - the English humourist Peter Cook once wrote an affectionate parody of Hughes for the Private Life magazine, i shall try and find it for you.

and Cook's parody - it will be great, thanks!

Lines on the Queen's 60th Birthday
by Ted Hughes
(published in Private Eye by Peter Cook probably this is also a parody of the Poet Laureate effect. )

Wolf headed magpie
Stalks black white
Black over
Flint cracked mangle
Frost-shredded
Field.

Stoat watches.

Bloodred nettle
Sprouts acid
Frond.

Old Stoatie.

Peewit shrieking
Buzzard grey
Feather drooping
Death call

Old Stoatie listens.

Swollen river
Rushes down Blood
Gorge torrent filled
Roar of white-flecked
Molten snow

Old Stoatie falls in.

Rotting stoat
Body carcass
Gleaming fish nibbled

Carrion of death
Sodden fur bulging
Eyes

Old Stoatie's
Rather had it.

Happy Birthday
Your Majesty

it is something to enjoy! ;-)

exaggerated - or rather condensed - a little, as it should be in the good parody, and very representative :))
thank you very much!
